Valentine’s Day is coming up in a couple of days.  A unique thing happens in the south of Thailand every year over the holiday.  Tomorrow will be the beginning of the annual Underwater Wedding Ceremony in the Trang Town and Kradan Island area of Thailand.

The festival and ceremonies are a blend of traditional Thai wedding rituals blended together with a little scuba diving for an all-around unique experience on your special day.

Couples that wish to experience this magical seafloor wedding have to get in their registration by December of the previous year in order to join as the list of couples can get quite extensive.

The special ceremony takes place in the ocean off of Pak Meng Beach.  Not a scuba diver?  No worries, there is plenty of time to go through one of their 2-day beginning diving courses that will see the two lovebirds ready for their wedding with a diving certification valid for 15-days.

Though couples flock to Thailand from around the world to host their underwater wedding, they will also experience a bit of Thai wedding culture during the proceedings leading up to the water ceremony.

Couples to be wed will be able to wear traditional hand-woven wedding costumes and much in keeping with the Thai tradition, they are also escorted to the bedroom by an older and successfully married couple.

While it may seem odd to westerners to be escorted to the bedroom on their wedding night, this is done as a symbolic gesture of passing down the success and wisdom of the older couple to the younger couple so that they too will have a long, successful and happy life together.

Though it is too late to get in on the action for this year’s ceremony, there is always next year to get your plans in order if an underwater ceremony interests you.  Find out more information about the Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony on their Facebook Page Here.
